Being open is not enough. Offering free information and indisputable data is not enough. In her 2012 Ted Talk, Margaret Heffernan, author of Willful Blindness, says that organizations fail to think because “the people inside of them are too afraid of conflict.” In cases of childhood cancer, from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, the fear of conflict prevented the medical community from abandoning X-rays of women while they were pregnant. This led to cancer mortality rates of one child per week for more than two decades after science proved the problem.
