In this TED Talk, Margaret Gould Stewart, who was a member of the design teams for both Google and YouTube, discusses the overall premise of website design and its many challenges when designing at scale. Watch the Ted Talk.
Google processes more than 1 billion search queries a day, and more than 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube per minute.
In order to achieve success at such scale, Stewart explains, you need to see through the eyes of your end users. There needs to be a conscious decision to separate from our work habits and design a website as if seeing it for the first time. “In order to keep the big, big picture in mind, you have to travel outside of your bubble to see, hear and understand the people you are designing for.”
The lessons Stewart shares apply beyond web development. Prometric’s newly opened test center in Toronto, Canada, will serve more than 10,000 candidates each year and includes enhancements to the testing process inspired by candidate feedback and close collaboration with clients.
